A roadmap to transport equity: Improving quality of life through MaaS technology

Abstract

Talk Description

Institution: SkedGo - Australia

US-based non-profit Feonix - Mobility Rising uses SkedGo’s technology to remove transportation barriers for vulnerable and underserved communities including seniors, people with limited mobility and visual or hearing impairments, and low income families.

The objective is to improve quality of life for people who face difficulties accessing transport by bridging the gap in services. This means custom, deep integrations of many small transport operators, e.g. paratransit, community-based organisations, and businesses.

The end results are the MI Ride Paratransit (Michigan), N4 Connect (Nevada) & Catch-a-Ride (Wisconsin) smartphone apps which allow riders to plan & book their trips with ease across multiple transit agencies. The apps were created following in-depth community focus groups. All projects are funded by the US Government.

SkedGo re-designed its technology to fit the needs of Feonix, its partners and users for frictionless programme deployment, operational management, and ride coordination. Features include unique screen reader capabilities and the ability to log individual accessibility needs at time of booking.

Users or their family members or carers/social workers are now also able to book & manage their own rides any time, which reduces transport uncertainty and anxiety as well as the need for time consuming follow-up calls. Users can also message in-app support without waiting on the phone. Wheelchair accessibility, lifts out-of-use and other accessibility features are integrated as well.

These apps have reduced the stress of not knowing if a ride to work or a hospital appointment will be available, or if the different agencies have booked the respective transport.
