Inattentive and distracted driving are risky behaviours that are involved in a significant share of crashes. This paper explores what the state of technology and recent regulatory and associated developments may mean for the role driver monitoring technologies can play in getting us toward zero.
The project used literature analysis and expert interviews to assess both the opportunity that driver monitoring seeks to address and provide an overview and discussion of the maturity of driver monitoring technologies. It includes discussion of regulatory actions (particularly in Europe), other supporting actions (such as safety score schemes) and the likely pace of adoption in Australia. It also explored the extent to which it was practical to yet quantify road safety benefits. Finally, it recommended actions to road safety bodies to help further progress the contribution that driver monitoring technologies can make to improve road safety.
