Nothing is more important than safety of people who travel on state's vast road network and there is no single solution to eliminate road trauma. The Queensland Government and the Australian state, territory and federal governments have agreed to a zero vision of road deaths in Australia by 2050. DTMR’s Safer Roads Sooner (SRS) is a funded minor capital works program aiming to improve safety of the state-controlled roads through implementation of high-benefit, cost-effective engineering countermeasures and safety treatments that target known and potential high severity crash sites at specific locations. One of the outcomes of the SRS program, to satisfy ITS elements, is design, construct, operate and maintain traffic movement and sustainable improvements at signalised intersections. Inclusion of pedestrian left-turn slip lane, addition of protected right-turn lanes on major roads, integration with Cooperative and Automated Vehicle Initiative (CAVI) requirements, road lighting compliance against Australian Standards and ITS facility additions e.g., wireless traffic sensors and CCTV traffic cameras assist with reducing road hazards. Delivery of infrastructure across Queensland’s roads under DTMR’s Road Safety Policy (2018) brings holistic approach considering four pillars (safe speeds, safe roads and roadsides, safe vehicle, safe road users) working together as a system, not in isolation. The SRS program provides a good opportunity to discuss to what extent Queensland Road Safety Strategy 2022-31, National Road Safety Strategy 2021-30, Queensland Road Safety Action Plan 2022–24, Queensland Road Safety Research and Evaluation Framework, and other relevant organisational policies define strategic and harmonised approaches for safer transport environment.
