How Electric On-Demand Transport helps New Zealand achieve its National Transport Sustainability Goals

Abstract

Talk Description

Institution: Liftango - Australia

The New Zealand Sustainable Public Transport Framework is prioritising carbon reduction and a shift towards on demand services in their public transport networks. Fully electric on-demand transit systems make our transport networks more sustainable while also offering long-term reduction in costs of operation. Liftango Lab’s service planning capacity, paired with its EV cost and emission calculator, assists in planning service deployments and guide decision-making for fleet fuel types. This allows Liftango to assist Auckland Transport to evaluate its network, determine best use cases, simulate potential service designs, and calculate the costs and impacts of services when deployed.

The impact of replacing fixed-route services in Auckland with fully electric vehicles helps save Auckland transport over 100 tons of CO2 per year of Scope 1 emissions and reduce the community’s Scope 3 emissions by over 15 tons per year.  Additional cost benefits from reductions in running costs using cheaper electricity for operation make this adjustment sustainable operationally in the long term. Social sustainability impacts include over 30% increase in service coverage, giving more people access to sustainable transport. With over 3,500 users riding on 4 electric vehicles, AT Local removes the cost-barrier for all members of society to access sustainable transport for their daily travels. Development of driver shift optimisation for vehicle battery sizes ensures that vehicles are used appropriately to maximise daily ridership and longevity of the asset. Future launches include additional services with Auckland Transport, services in Australia, and around the world.
