Talk Description

Institution: Customer Strategy and Technology Division, Transport for NSW - NSW, Australia

In 2019, SCATS set out to create the next generation of solutions. Not only was it to make life easier for transport authorities to manage their traffic network, but also aid them in meeting their long-term smart city goals.

To create and bring to market modern and scalable solutions their customers love, they looked to their customers for insights. For SCATS, their customers are also their users and internal stakeholders, so starting on home turf was a no brainer. But every city has different needs, so SCATS went beyond to validate their solutions with customers all around the world.

They built the design thinking model into their innovation and development processes. Customers participate in product and user research to share their needs, pain-points, and to test the products before the next version is developed. All features are researched, designed, validated, and trialled with customers before release. This robust user-centred design and development model ensures that the future of SCATS is built with user needs at the heart.

The first of this new generation of solutions developed with design thinking includes an intuitive new map-based interface (the Control Centre) and enhanced data capabilities (Data Insights). The solutions will improve situational awareness, allowing users to easily view their traffic network, identify congestions and make data informed decisions quickly.

This presentation will take you through the evolution of SCATS, including these new solutions and show how they use the data gathered from their customer research to inform their product decisions.
