Cycling Community leveraging Apps for improved travel on the road network
Cycling as a form of transport is expanding on our network and innovative solutions that enhance movement and safe travel at intersections are available. YuBike is a proven smartphone-based bike detection system that can prioritise cyclists at traffic lights.
Advance features within the app shows users where they will be given green lights on their planned route. Users can also receive information on bike-sharing and bike parking options. YuBike can be installed on all smartphone operating systems.
Key features;
- A cyclist approaches an intersection and passes the trigger line the app on his smartphone automatically sends the cyclist’s location and direction via GPS to the traffic management center.
- The traffic management center evaluates the data and activates the traffic light control to switch to green.
- The cyclist can pass the intersection safely without having to stop.
The positive impact of YuBike;
- The number of stops is significantly reduced
- The average travel time of the cyclists is shortened
- A green wave for cyclists does not significantly decrease travel times of private or public transport
- Cost-efficient realisation of a bicycle prioritisation via the smartphone app
- Encourages a modal split towards cycling
- Is a political commitment to cycling as a sustainable means of transport
This paper will discuss how users in Europe and the US have benefited as a cycling community.
