Solving Scope 3 emissions through transport partnerships - lessons for Australia from the rest of the world

Abstract

Talk Description

Institution: Liftango - Australia

Awareness of and willingness to tackle Scope 3 emissions is growing globally. In North America and Europe, Liftango has partnered with Bus Operators, Large Employers and Governments to provide integrated transport solutions focussed on reducing emissions. In 1 such partnership in Portland, Oregon, over 55,000 vehicles have been removed from the roads and over 1,800,000 single occupancy kms have been replaced with shared transport reducing CO2 production by 425 tons.

Crucially, these programs are centred on the employee, with the system design focussed on particular types of movements, and a set of transport solutions applied in the most appropriate fashion. Working in partnership with bus operator National Express, Liftango is delivering employee-focussed transport solutions involving a combination of fixed-route shuttles, on-demand transport, employee carpooling and active transport. While these programs have so far gained the most traction in Europe and North America, where there are supporting policies and other environmental conditions, so far in Australia the implementation of these types of solutions have been piecemeal and fragmented, leading to challenges in uptake.

Iain’s presentation will demonstrate the impact of 2 of these programs - which have collectively delivered 30% modeshift - and share lessons that can be learnt and applied in Australia, including the importance of linking planning with delivery and ease of access for consumers through MaaS-like applications.
