Complex ITS enabling Major Freeway Upgrade

Abstract

Talk Description

Institution: Downer Transport - NSW, Australia

The Warringah Freeway Upgrade is a critical enabling project for the Western Harbour Tunnel and Beaches Link Program. The freeway supports 250,000 vehicle movements daily, meaning the ITS requirements to provide information to drivers and network operators is essential. This requires significant planning and consultation for the installation of temporary ITS devices and infrastructure as well as the relocation/removal of current ITS devices. The devices on the Warringah Freeway interface with the Lane Cove Tunnel, Sydney Harbour Tunnel, and Sydney Harbour Bridge control systems. The temporary devices installed need to operate within their current systems as well as an integrated road network. This means there is a need to commission multiple new devices, connected to multiple systems, whilst ensuring they do not interfere with the operability of the temporary devices. The integration of the latest technology, incorporated into an operating road network, is essential. To date the project has transitioned to traffic stage 1, enabled by the temporary ITS strategy deployed, including a temporary movable median, relocating multiple ITS devices, and re-articulation of the fibre network connected to ITS nodes. The network operators are still able to manage and direct traffic through peak hours whilst ensuring that the public are informed about their journey. Future staging of the project will consist of deploying the new ITS devices, including the latest technological advancements such as Digital Directional Signage, whilst decommissioning the temporary devices, all under live conditions; requiring an innovative, exceptionally planned ITS strategy.
