ITS Australia Summit 2023

Benefits and recommendations of C-ITS uses cases based on international learnings

Abstract

Talk Description

Institution: WSP Australia - VIC, Australia

Road authorities currently use a range of technologies such as variable message signs and lane use management systems to send trusted real-time operational information to road users to support the safe and efficient movement of vehicles across the Australian network. The vastness of Australia and distances between its towns and cities present an opportunity for Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) to augment these incumbent technologies without the infrastructure and maintenance costs typically required.

C-ITS provide an opportunity to further enhance a road users situational awareness by providing trusted and accurate messaging direct to vehicles in real-time. The implementation of these real time interoperable services on urban and non-urban networks will provide a safer and more efficient transport network for all users. C-ITS has shown the potential to improve road safety by reducing crashes by up to 20% where C-ITS cover 100% of the road network, as per the Ipswich Connected Vehicle Pilot.

This presentation will outline recommendations for C-ITS Day 1 and Day 1.5 use cases based on learnings from projects in Australia and Europe as well as uplift requirements for incumbent systems for traditional traveler information. We will assess V2X use cases against safety, efficiency and sustainability principles and provide recommendations that will ensure early benefits for the Australian road user.
