Institution: Victorian Department of Transport and Planning - VIC, Australia
The existing data management processes to maintain and update the transport networks is inefficient and ineffective. The current state of transport network mapping lacks the accuracy and coverage the Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) and the modern public expect as the authoritative information source. This exposed department to huge risks and potential impacts to downstream applications.
In response, several internal groups considered using Open Street Map Data (OSM) to deliver value for Active Transport, walking and cycling and Freight and had done an independent assessment of the market and found that OSM was the source that had the most detailed and updatable information for their applications.
Map Manager project embarked in 2023 to address the key bottlenecks and limitations of existing business processes for asset management as well as network operations and disruptions. The focus was maintaining a common OSM base network to build consistently integrated applications that share the same underlying data thus optimise data accuracy and coverage.
Apart from being a clever use of smart mapping technology, Map Manager set a high benchmark for maximising the benefits of OSM data sources by value adding the networks and adopting real time map matching engine to drive different performance metrics and smart devices. This will enable the department to build a clear case for location-based, operational intelligence and achieve the strategic goal of simple, safe and connected journeys.
