Traffic Management Switzerland - an Innovation Project for Swiss National Roads

Abstract

Talk Description

Institution: Yunex Traffic - Australia

The Federal Roads Office (FEDRO) has expanded the route equipment on Swiss national roads and significantly improved operational traffic management. However, the operation of the equipment is not yet fully automated and will be distributed across decentralised systems.
The “Traffic Management Switzerland” project aims to automate traffic management measures such as speed reduction in heavy traffic to ensure traffic flow and uniform operation of traffic management facilities. The new system with a uniform traffic management logic offers many expanded and new functionalities, such as a comprehensive picture of the traffic situation, central, supraregional traffic control and central, efficient system supply (configuration, parameterisation).
Thanks to the high degree of automation and the user-friendliness of the system, manual activities in traffic control are reduced to a minimum. Users also benefit from technical improvements and the continuous guarantee of the highest safety standards throughout the system's lifetime.
In the first phase, the focus is on the further development and installation of the motorway traffic management platform and the integration of selected traffic management systems. Subsequently, the remaining traffic management systems in Switzerland will be connected and integrated over a period of around 10 years.
Digitalisation and automation are the key to greater efficiency, safety and sustainability on roads. The solution for traffic management on national roads is therefore not only groundbreaking for Switzerland, but also shows other countries and cities how they can make their traffic systems fit for the traffic requirements of tomorrow with innovative technologies.
