Talk Description
Institution: Griffith university - Queensland, Australia
I would love to discuss and share how we capitalised on key legislation (DAT Act) overseen by the Office of the National Data Commissioner (ONDC) that was passed in April 2022. The legislation enables federal government departments and agencies (like Universities) to share public sector data, lawfully created or held by agencies for specific purposes. The Data Availability and Transparency Act (DAT Act) aims to promote better availability and use of government data by informing government policies and programs, delivering public services or use for research and development. This presents a key opportunity for Griffith to capitalise on the passed legislation, obtaining access to public sector data. To unlock the amazing potential of robust and securely linked sensitive data (e.g., mobility data, public transport data, offence records, energy poverty, touch points across community service organisations, census) from across sectors and industries the Griffith Data Trust (GDT) is a strategic digital research information asset that underpins the creation of high-quality and high-value research outputs. I would love to share our journey of becoming an accredited data service provider and the formation of the GDT. We have been incredibly inspired and encouraged by the value our rich data are able to provide researchers and community leaders as they strive to help communities thrive. Through effective stewardship of data, the GDT maximises its ability to provide research solutions to complex challenges. The GDT offers the broader scholarly community a valuable and unique resource. It also allows Griffith to build strategic partnerships with world-class institutions and industries that share our aspiration to solve complex problems through data-driven research. The GDT aligns with Griffith University's commitment to deliver research solutions to humankind's greatest challenges, by linking data from multiple sources to solve complex problems through research, and to create Insights that inform policy and decision making. The GDT is a strategic digital research information asset that will underpin the creation of high quality, and high value, research outputs. It also acts as a catalyst in attracting key partners from government or industry who wish to share data assets and collaborate in solving complex problems through research. Improve the competitiveness of grants and external research bids. Lastly, it attracts funding and generates income through selling of data insights and linked datasets to industry and government, and through research grants.
