Moving people and goods safely and efficiently are the goals of transportation system management and operations (TSMO) which have been greatly enabled by ITS technologies.  While transportation challenges are common globally, the situations vary widely and leaders respond with creative solutions that are most appropriate for their specific conditions.  Nevertheless, there are lessons and applications that can be adapted for other jurisdictions.  Six executives from American state and local transportation agencies will present their priority challenges and ITS initiatives planned or underway aimed at addressing such mobility needs.

Special Interest Session - Connected Transport - Hospitality Suite 7 (Level 1)
Large-scale emergencies, like flooding, bush fires, or toxic clouds from industrial accidents, often have substantial impact on road traffic, not only in densely populated areas. Road operators and navigation service providers often have no other choice than to completely close affected roads. However, that may leave drivers confused about the ‘what is going on’ and ‘what to do to get away’ – set aside foreign drivers with lack of knowledge of the local environment or specific language used in such situations. In recent years, substantial progress was made with the global adoption of the CAP protocol. This session presents a solution where TISA has wrapped the logical data model in the TPEG2 traffic information protocol suite that is widely adopted in the automotive business. It provides a tailored-for-automotive-use outlet for public authorities or road operators for managing road traffic in exceptional situations, including information about the cause and detailed instructions what to do. The approach is also suitable for automated driving vehicles, which in such non-standard situations even more depend on external, curated information.

The e-commerce boom and demand for ever faster and flexible delivery, global driver shortages, and pursuit of greater efficiency present ever growing challenges to the freight industry. The opportunity and potential for autonomous vehicle technology to address these challenges has never been greater.

This promises to be an interactive and engaging session that explores the following:
  • The growing opportunity (and need) for an autonomous freight future
  • Leading applications of autonomous technology and the next horizon of priorities for the freight industry
  • How Transurban is taking the lead in progressing trials and planning for autonomous freight in Australia and beyond
  • Recent learnings and observations from the CCAT International Outreach which highlight the various approaches being adopted to prepare for an autonomous freight future.
The speakers, combining leading local and global perspective, will bring unique insight and hands-on experience from recent projects and infrastructure planning that is shaping this journey.

Join us at the ITS Australia hosted National Women in Transport Networking Reception in the exhibition hall during Global Summit.

The objective is to showcase, support and increase the number of Australian women working in transport. Join us as we collectively hear stories and share best practices from women leaders and work towards developing strategies to overcoming barriers. ITS Australia is the nation’s peak body for advancing transport technology in Australia. Supporting diversity in the ITS industry is a shared responsibility amongst ITS Australia Board of Directors, our employees, our members, and stakeholders.

We seek your support as we strive to achieve our vision for improvements and balanced gender diversity within ITS.

More about this initiative

ITS Australia is delighted to be hosting this event under the umbrella of Australia’s National Women in Transport Initiative. The National Women in Transport Initiative brings government and industry together to increase the number of Australian Women working in Transport. This reception continues ITS Australia’s tradition of supporting women in the industry to connect with each other and to build international networks.

Placemaking and walkable communities mean shared spaces and vibrant cities and communities - how people and goods move through the built environment impacts how we plan and grow.  Through policy, technology and more how are we meeting the challenge?
Break-Out Session - Connected Transport, Smart Infrastructure - Eureka 3 (Ground Floor)
Having recently signed its 200th project, iMOVE is across a large range of thinking and activity going on in the transport and mobility space. As a cooperative research centre, our goal is to maximise the R&D benefits to our partners and communities by supporting this activity and adding further value to the process. This involves finding new and common ground between organisations for further opportunities, and finding and supporting different ways of working together.

In this session we will highlight some of the project successes so far and consider the nature and role of successful collaborations in delivering these, particularly as they contribute to our urgent need to decarbonise transport. It will also consider other ways in which iMOVE is supporting collaboration and creation of knowledge for the sector, including through its education program.

We will present some of the high-quality research being undertaken through our large PhD program – a sometimes undervalued mechanism for delivering new thinking and talent into the sector.

The iMOVE team will also be on hand to talk to you about your ideas and projects you are looking to get off the ground.

Program and speakers

Session moderated by Jacqueline King, Head of Communications, iMOVE

  • Introduction, presentation on R&D success and the nature of collaboration: Ian Christensen, Managing Director, iMOVE
  • The value of PhDs: Frazer Thorpe, iMOVE Education Manager
  • Short PhD presentations and discussion:
    - The implementation of sustainable transport policies, Miguel Loyola - The University of Sydney
  • General Q&A throughout the session

Special Interest Session - Automated Transport - Hospitality Suite 7 (Level 1)
In the last decade, the surface transportation system has witnessed the introduction of an array of innovative technologies designed to reduce congestion and improve road safety. But their widespread deployment has been slow to occur, and crowded roadways and unacceptable levels of injuries and fatalities remain the norm. The notion of connected and automated transport and consideration for multi-modal solutions has taken center stage in recent years. Vehicles and infrastructure talking to each other speaks to the promise of better managed roads with the promise of efficient and effective traffic flow. Increasing levels of automation take the safety conversation to the next level by confronting the shortcomings of the human interface that lead to something approaching of 90% accidents that would otherwise be preventable if better driver decisions were made. Enhanced consideration for multi-modal service and demand solutions has introduced credible alternatives. Yet these technologies and improvements to transportation management by infrastructure owner/operators and greater empowerment to the consumer do not seem to be moving the needle.  Deaths and injury on the roads are not appreciably lessened. And improvements to the system that seek to manage existing road capacity rather than continue to attempt to build a way out of the problem only seem to induce more demand. Perhaps most indicting is the disappointing awareness and support from the traveling public itself to recognize, embrace, use, and agree to pay these “solutions”. The panelists will discuss why significant advances in technology and system management are sometimes slow to happen when contrasted with proposed benefits to the traveler and the associated marketing hype that tells of a very promising future. What should we be learning to overcome these failures? Are there signs of success that merit more attention and application? How well are we taking into consideration the broader transportation system ecosystem when moving people and goods?  There is a strong desire across the industry to save lives but how can we more effectively bring these technologies to scale to achieve these goals? Moderator, Dean Zabrieszach, Chief Executive Officer HMI Technologies.
